New Smyrna Beach is a fishing and watersports town. Located near Ponce De Leon Inlet, minutes from Daytona Beach one hour east of Orlando, it is a prime tourist destination, especially during the winter months. Anglers who are staying in New Smyrna have access to plenty or nearby backcountry flats fishing.
The best inshore fishing near New Smyrna Beach is the Mosquito Lagoon. This 22 mile long estuary starts at Ponce Inlet near New Smyrna Beach and heads south into the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. I offer various and distinctly different types of saltwater fishingf trips in this region. All fishing trips include license, bait, and tackle.
The closest fishing to the New Smyrna Beach are are my saltwater live bait variety trips. This fishing charter is perfect for kids, people with little or no fishing experience, days with high winds, or anglers who just want to stay busy catch high numbers. These trips are done in the northern end of the Lagoon among the many islands, creeks, and channels which offer great shelter from the wind. Using ultralight rods, we commonly catch between 6 and 12 different species per trip and the numbers of fish caught can often exceed 30. During the summer and fall, tarpon fishing trips are also available in the same area. Fish over 100 pounds are possible.
The Atlantic coast beaches along New Smyrna Beach produce great near shore fishing from May-October. When seas allow, small boats can make the trip out of Ponce Inlet and fish within a mile of shore, often within several hundred feet of the beach. Tarpon, sharks, kingfish, jack crevalle, bluefish, cobia, and tripletail are popular targets. In the fall, schools of mullet migrate south along the beaches. The predator fish follow these schools and this can make for some of the easiest fishing there is.
Surf fishing is available for those without boats. Standing on the beach or the nearby pier, anglers catch, bluefish, pompano, whiting, mackerel, drum, redfish, sharks, and more.
Large sport fishing boats make their way out of Pince Inlet each day. They target dolphin, kingfish, cobia, snapper, grouper, sailfish, and more. The gulfstream is a 20+mile ride. Farther out, some boats fish for yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and other pelagic species.
